- Date of issue and date of supply if different
- Name, address and NIF of the supplier and of the customer

- Unit price excluding IVA, the IVA rate and the IVA amount

- IRS withholding rate and amount when the customer is a business with organised accounts
Rules worth knowing
- Portuguese invoices must carry an ATCUD code, and each numbering series must be registered with the Tax Authority before you use it. Invoices for Portuguese clients are normally issued through the free invoice tool on the Portal das Finanças (fatura-recibo) or through certified invoicing software, which also adds the QR code. A plain PDF from this tool is not enough. Use it for foreign clients, quotes and proformas.
- Independent professionals invoicing a business with organised accounts withhold IRS: 23% for activities in the article 151 table and a lower rate for other independent services (article 101 CIRS); check the rate for your activity. The amount is taken off the total, calculated on the amount before IVA. No withholding applies to invoices to private individuals.
- The article 53 VAT exemption covers turnover up to €15,000 a year. If you pass €18,750 in the current year you move to normal VAT from the invoice that crosses it.
- Madeira and the Azores use lower IVA rates (Madeira 22%, 12%, 4%; Azores 16%, 9%, 4%). The presets here are the mainland rates.
- Selling services to a VAT-registered business in another EU country? Pick the reverse-charge setup: it charges 0% and prints the required wording. Show your client’s VAT number as well as your own.
