What an invoice in Austria must include
- Full name and address of the supplier and of the customer
- Quantity and description of the goods, or the type and scope of the service
- Date of supply, or the period over which the service was supplied
- Net amount, VAT rate and VAT amount (or the exemption note)
- Invoice date and a consecutive invoice number
- Your UID number if you are registered; for invoices over €10,000 to another business, the customer’s UID number as well
Rules worth knowing
- Kleinunternehmer: the exemption applies up to €55,000 of turnover a year (since 2025). Going over by no more than 10% lets you keep the exemption for that year, but not for the next one. If you show VAT on an invoice anyway, you owe it to the tax office.
- Invoices up to €400 including VAT may leave out the customer’s name and address, the invoice number and the UID number, and need not show the VAT amount separately.
- Structured e-invoices are mandatory only for invoices to federal government bodies. Between businesses, a PDF is a valid invoice if the customer agrees to receive it electronically.
- Selling services to a VAT-registered business in another EU country? Pick the reverse-charge setup: it charges 0% and prints the required wording. Show your client’s VAT number as well as your own.
