What an invoice in Malaysia must include
- Your name or business name, address and SST registration number (if registered)
- Your tax identification number (TIN) if you issue e-invoices
- Invoice number and date
- Buyer’s name and address (and TIN for e-invoices)
- Description, quantity and price of what you sold
- SST rate and amount shown separately, if you charge it
Rules worth knowing
- Service tax is 8% for most taxable services. A lower 6% applies to a few groups, for example food and beverage, telecommunications, and rental or leasing (6% from 1 January 2026). Check your service group with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.
- Registration for service tax is generally required once taxable services exceed RM500,000 in 12 months. Some service groups have a different threshold.
- Sales tax (5% or 10%) applies to taxable goods made or imported by registered manufacturers. It is separate from service tax.
- E-invoicing through the MyInvois system is phased by turnover. Businesses with annual turnover above RM5 million have been in scope since 2025. LHDN has said that from 1 September 2026 businesses with turnover below RM3 million are exempt, though some group and ownership cases are excluded, and these businesses are encouraged to join voluntarily. The start date for the RM1–5 million group has been reported as moved to 1 January 2027; sources disagree, so check the LHDN timeline.
- A PDF from this tool is not an e-invoice. If you are in scope, the invoice must be validated through MyInvois. Use this tool for exempt businesses, foreign clients, quotes and proformas.
